New Mexico Transportation Safty Law CenterMothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) has touted New Mexico’s ignition interlock program as one of the country’s best.

So, what is the the New Mexico Model? Click for a powerpoint presentation. Most fundamentally, ignition interlocks are mandatory for ALL DWI offenders, even first-time offenders and ALL offenders are eligible to drive with an Ignition Interlock License after a 30 day hard revocation. (This includes misdemeanors, felons, and those convicted of DWI, Refusal or Driving with License REvoked or Suspended due to a DWI conviction.)

The law itself is available here.

Click here to see, graphically, how the NM ignition interlock program has reduced drunk driving recidivism, reduced alcohol-related crashes including those with injuries and fatalities and even reduced DWI arrests in spite of increased enforcement.

Finally, to compare MADD’s recommendations for implementation of an ignition interlock program withthe New MExico Model and HB19, click the Ignition Interlock Program Comparison Chart.
