There is quite a bit of research available about IIDs. One thing I’ve learned though, is this: Researchers are not the folks who make sure what they’ve learned becomes public knowledge. That’s up to others and is usually a process driven by some sort of need or desire. E.g. financial gain, notoriety, etc. Being no clear connection between supporting the use of ignition interlock technology and instant wealth; and being plagued with the perception that anything that puts a convicted drunk driver back on the road is BAD, the effective use of IIDs has been overlooked.
Time to change that, and as they say in academia, “Keep up with the rest of the class!”
The Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation (PIRE) has a great page of resources, many of which are available on their website.
Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) has endorsed the use of ignition interlocks for ALL drunk driving offenders. Their latest press release on this topic suggests that celebrities, especially, should be required to use one. This paper, published in support of their position, contains a number of excellent references. It is the most comprehensive look at ignition interlocks that I’ve found and if you choose to look at one thing on this blog, this should be it!
Dr. Richard Roth is my hero in the world of citizen advocates for passing ignition interlock legislation. A retired physics professor, he has devoted a large chunk of his retirement to eliminating drunk driving in New Mexico. His website, Impact DWI, is an excellent starting place for learning about effective measures/sanctions for reducing drunk driving. This page lists research in the field.
